  • A Daily Prayer Routine that Fits Your Busy Life

    In a perfect world we would all have time for everything, right?  Of course!  Be we don’t live in a perfect world and having enough time is never going to happen.  So, what is the solution?

         I’ve been there, especially the “toddler” season!  When you wake up exhausted, every task can feel overwhelming and daunting ~ anybody?

         Maybe you’ve never had a toddler, maybe your reason is juggling work deadlines, maybe you’re a college student with a job and LOTS of deadlines, maybe you’re helping aging parents, whatever the reason, you feel stretched thin, finding time for consistent prayer time can feel, well, quite impossible!

         There were days when I felt close to God and prayer flowed naturally.  But there were MANY more days when prayer was squeezed out by piles of laundry, meal prep, or simply mental exhaustion.  I used to think I needed an hour of quiet, uninterrupted, perfectly written, journal worthy prayer time, or it didn’t count.  But that is not truth – THIS is a truth to embrace:

    PRAYER ISN’T ABOUT PERFECTION – IT’S ABOUT PRESENCE.  

    Why Consistency in Prayer Matters

    We often think consistency in prayer is about checking a box or earning favor with God—but really, it’s about staying connected to the One who gives us strength, peace, and purpose. When prayer becomes a regular rhythm, it anchors our hearts, quiets our anxious thoughts, and helps us see God’s hand even in the ordinary.

    You don’t have to spend an hour every morning on your knees to have a powerful prayer life. Small, consistent moments with God—woven into your day—can bring tremendous transformation. He just wants your heart, not your perfection.

    Morning: Starting Your Day with God

    Something I started doing before having children that really helped once they arrived on the scene was having some alone time with God before anything else.  My bible, a journal, a cup of coffee, and quiet, maybe some worship music if the Spirit moved me to sing.  If I needed to leave by a certain time I would wake up an hour and 30 minutes before having to leave, that way I had plenty of time to be still with God and get ready.  Was it perfect, EVERY morning?  Of course not!  But the effort that I put into that time was always worth it.   

    There’s something sacred about the first few moments of the day. Before the emails, the laundry, or the distractions begin—this is the perfect time to ground yourself in God’s presence.

    If your mornings are hectic, try a one-minute breath prayer while making coffee or saying a verse out loud while brushing your teeth. A simple “Lord, guide me today” can be the start of a Spirit-filled morning.

    If your mornings are slower, this might be a great time to read one Psalm, journal a short prayer, or write out your daily gratitude.

    📌 TIP: Keep your Bible or prayer journal next to your coffee mug or where you get ready, so prayer becomes a natural part of your routine.

    Midday: Pausing to Reconnect

    As the day picks up speed, our minds and hearts can get pulled in every direction. Midday is a beautiful time to pause and re-center with a short prayer.

    Set an alarm on your phone with a reminder to pray—even if it’s just for 30 seconds. You could use a breath prayer like:
    Inhale: “Lord, you are my peace.”
    Exhale: “I trust You with this moment.”

    If you’re home during the day, try sitting quietly with God at lunch, or read one verse and ask, “Lord, what are You teaching me right now?”

    A way that I have implemented this into my day is I have push notifications from the YouVersion Bible app that come through and break the screen of my smart phone at 2 PM every day with the verse of the day.  No matter where I am or what I am doing, I stop, pause, read it, say a prayer depending on the subject matter of the verse, and continue on with my day.  It is a small thing but it has changed how I think about prayer, perfection, and adding my Creator to my thoughts. 

    Evening: Ending the Day in His Presence

    As the day winds down, our thoughts often swirl with what we didn’t get done or what tomorrow will bring. That’s exactly why ending the day with prayer matters—it helps us release the day and rest in peace.

    You might try reflecting on three things you’re grateful for, or asking, “Where did I see God today?” If you’re feeling heavy, offer your burdens to Him in silence or write them out in a journal.

    If you have family at home, invite them into a short prayer at the dinner table or before bed. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just heartfelt.

    Overcoming Common Obstacles

    Let’s name the struggles we all face when it comes to prayer:

    • “I forget.” → Set a reminder on your phone or put a sticky note on your bathroom mirror that says “Pray.”
    • “I get distracted.” → It’s okay. God sees your heart. Keep a notebook nearby and gently refocus when needed.
    • “I don’t know what to say.” → Start with a Psalm. Or just say, “Lord, I’m here. I need You.”

    Consistency doesn’t mean perfection. It means showing up—even when it’s messy, short, or quiet. The point isn’t to perform; it’s to stay connected.
